TLP-GREEN
Poorly managed MS-SQL servers were discovered infected with the Trigona ransomware.
The infected devices were also infected with shell malware that can take advantage of a privilege escalation (MS16-032) vulnerability to execute a malicious binary.
The ransomware created a registry run key for persistence and deleted volume shadow copies to inhibit system recovery.
