MuddyWater, an Iranian threat actor, is specifically affiliated with the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence and Defense (MOIS). Since the last quarter of 2022, there has been an increase in the group's activity against Israeli targets, with a focus on government, education, and financial targets.
The group utilizes known vulnerabilities, such as log4j, and employs tools like RAT. More recently, attempts to use Syncro RAT for distribution have also been observed. The group is also known by several other names, including Earth Vetala, MERCURY, Static Kitten, Seedworm, and TEMP.Zagros. The Israeli CERT has attributed the latest attacks by a group named Darkbit to APT MuddyWater as well.
